Billy Norris – Owner/Designer
My name is Billy Norris. I have been known as Bill and William, and I consider “hey you” to be a friendly hail. I am the owner and “founder” though I consider myself more as a bearer or bringer or custodian of this nook of reality.
I have been paying attention to leather, thread, zippers, fasteners and especially to what people want that are made out of these things, for over thirty years. I operated a foot-treadle sewing machine at the Santa Barbara Arts & Crafts Show for 16 years. I was there for people on the sidewalk, watched the traffic on Cabrillo Boulevard, and gazed at the mountains, almost every Sunday and through all kinds of weather except snow.
Eventually I designed a product that was the result of countless incremental requests. It was the first travel security fanny pack with steel cables in the strap. In a moment of recognition I metaphorically turned and faced the ocean, no longer limited to showing my products only to those actually visiting the Art Show. I knew I would then be able to present my wares to the larger world. I had no idea of the Internet at this time, little did I know.
In the course of developing DayMakers I found manufacturers to make my designs and retailers to sell them. I could write a book about the twists and turns along the way. I have always placed a value on quality and have valued the production workers by giving them quality materials to use while they brought their precious skills and time. I also send 50 pounds of my homemade fudge to them when I place an order.
I have been slow to take the actions to help DayMakers grow into the international company it deserves to be. I have been engaged in much volunteer work and in recent years found my avocation to be peace and justice, particularly in historic Palestine. While this may be more than you want to know, it is important for me to say because this is my short bio. If I don’t share what is most meaningful and share only to attract you to shop I am just like the corporate business world where the bottom line has all the meaning, and the meaning I bring is compromised.
